Matthew Harvey KC

Matthew Harvey KC is an experienced and highly regarded arbitrator. He is one of Australia’s leading Admiralty and maritime counsel.

Matthew has experience in conducting ad hoc commercial arbitrations under the SCMA, SIAC, ACICA, Resolution Institute, UNCITRAL, MLAANZ, and other international rules.

He has been appointed in arbitrations in the Asia-Pacific Region, involving charterparties, carriage of goods by sea, international sale of goods, defective infrastructure, commercial partnership, financing commodities, and the aviation industry.

He has published and spoken extensively on arbitration, maritime law, and other areas of commercial law.

He is based in Melbourne and Sydney and travels to other countries for appointments.

Appointments

Matthew has given numerous awards, including, on the merits (liability and damages), costs, and interim measures. He has arbitrated disputes subject to the law of Singapore, England, China, and Australia.

Damages arising out of the detention of a ship, including a challenge to jurisdiction.

Claim brought by lender against borrower under a commodities financing agreement.

Interpretation of a contract between parties in the aviation industry.

Infrastructure dispute regarding calculation of losses and entitlement to damages.

Charterparty dispute involving the detention of a vessel in a foreign port.

Claims as to misleading or deceptive conduct under a salvage agreement.
